God is bigger than cancer!

by Gail Robards

Many things have been said about cancer. Some say cancer sucks, I agree. Cancer can suck the life out of your body, can suck your finances dry, and can suck you mentally and emotionally dry.

Singer/songwriter, Tim Timmons has experienced cancer. In his blog, he writes that cancer is a gift. The daily dose of the reality of cancer keeps him grateful. He says that the gift is in the daily reminder to cherish every breath. I agree with this, too.

The best thing I have heard relating to cancer came from our very own pastor, Pastor Neeley. When I was first diagnosed with cancer, Louis told me that “God is bigger than cancer.” I was not sure at the time that I could agree with that, but through this illness, God has proven himself faithful and he IS bigger than cancer!

My odyssey with cancer began in early 2010. After 6 months of doctor appointments, referral to specialists, tests, physical therapy and more tests, I was diagnosed with Stage IV Lymphoma. This cancer manifested itself in my hip, knees and into the bone marrow in the femurs, affecting my walk – both physical and spiritual. I was unable to perform my job due to the pain and from the effects of chemotherapy. I was also unable to serve God in the ministries where I had been active in here at Warehouse.

I was surprised that I had cancer when I finally got diagnosed, but I don’t think that God was surprised at all. You see, he knew this was coming and he had been preparing the way for me for quite a while. He had provided me with a loving husband who turned out to be an awesome caregiver….we had only been married for 2 ½ years at the time of my diagnosis. He also provided us with quite a support network, my family, friends and my church family here at Warehouse. Kirk and I had been actively serving God together and had gotten to know many faithful saints who covered us in prayer, provided meals for us, and were there for us in so many other ways. My disability insurance was approved quickly (supernaturally)! In all of this, we could see the hand of God operating.

With the help of a loving God, a great oncologist, good (but toxic) medicine, the support of my family and friends, and the prayers of many, I am doing well. I have completed my treatments and my walk is being restored. I am able to work some and have begun to serve God again. God never left my side and he continues to meet all of our needs. He surely gets the glory!

Jeremiah 29:11 says “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future”. I believe this…God has a plan for all of us… and NOTHING is too big for him.
